Well done to Martongate Mixed gymnastics Team who won the outstanding school team award at the Schools Sports Partnership. The award was presented by GB voleyball Olympian Ben Pipies.
This year Martongate competed with a new mixed Gymnastics Team (Y4-6) and they have competed at both regional and national levels. In the Yorkshire Floor and Vault competition they achieved 2nd in Yorkshire but they managed to improve this at the Yorkshire Milano Trio Championships in which they won a place to represent Yorkshire at the British National Championships in Stoke.
During their floor performances they worked as a team, showed enthusiasm and passion throughout, resulting in them coming 6th (group floor) and 10th overall in Great Britain from 20 teams.
This year the group floor and overall scores were combined with the other Yorkshire school to find out which was the best region. The effort produced by both teams enabled them to rank Yorkshire in 3rd place for their group floor routines and another 3rd place overall – the first time the region has ever medalled at a National Championships. This was a massive achievement for Yorkshire and Martongate and at such a young age; the gymnasts were inspirational and respectful throughout the entire competition.
They train for 90 minutes a week in a small space where equipment is limited against private and acadamised schools who have training 5 times a week for two hours – on reflexion what they do with their time and ability is fantastic. On top of this, the team are now fundraising to purchase new equipment and kit for the squad and practising a summer display to show the school.
