Over the past few months five gymnastics teams from Martongate have trained extremely hard in order to comp in the Yorkshire Schools Floor & Vault Championships.  Three girls teams and two mixed teams competed in Hull on Sunday 28th February.

For the Girls C Team – Poppy Withers, Melissa Hughes, Grace Day, Lana Holmes and Lydia Middleton, it was their first competition for Martongate School.  They all performed really well and finished in a creditable 9th place.  Lana scored the highest vault score and Melissa scored the highest floor score in their team.

Competing in the Girls B team was Isobel Charlton, Keira Butcher, Alysa Butcher, Connie Melles and Isobel Gregory.  They all did very well considering it was also their first time competing.  Isobel Gregory scored the highest floor score in her team.  Connie performed a fantastic vault resulting in scoring one of the highest vault score throughout the whole competition!

The Girls A team – Rachel Pearson, Savannah Kilburn, Millie Rowbottom, Elizabeth Blackford and Jessica Robson were all amazing but lost out on a medal position by only 1.4 points finishing in 4th.  Elizabeth scored the highest floor score in her team and also one of the highest vault scores in the whole competition.

In the Mixed B team were Daniel Rhodes, Charlie De’Ath, Layla Gascoigne and Lillie Kay.  Unfortunately, Otis Hirst was unable to compete do to being poorly, but I’m sure he would have done very well in his first competition.  Charlie scored the highest floor score in his team with Daniel Rhodes scoring one of the highest scores throughout the competition.  The team finished in a creditable 5th place.

The Mixed team consisted of Lily Voase, Grace Howarth, Sian Beswick, Bailey Smithson and Toby Gee.  The team executed their gym skills with precision which meant the school retained the Yorkshire Mixed Team Champion Title for another year.  Lily Voase scored the highest floor score throughout the whole competition also scoring one of the highest vault scores along with Bailey throughout the whole competition.  The team will now represent Yorkshire in the British Championships in Stoke at the end of April.

This was the last competition withth  Martongate gym squad for nearly half of the squad as they will be leaving to go to secondary school.  Coach Jo Ward would like to say, “a huge well done for all your achievements over the years, you all have been such a pleasure to teach.  I hope you continue to practice gym at your next school.  You are all stars!”
